Hydroponic maintenance schedule: what to do daily, weekly and monthly
“How much work is it?” is the question people ask last and worry about most. Here is the actual routine for a home hydroponic or aquaponic system, and where it differs between the two.
The honest version of the workload
A hydroponic system is not less work than soil, it is different work. There is no weeding and no watering can, but there is a short list of jobs that genuinely cannot be skipped, and the penalty for skipping them arrives faster than it does in a garden bed. A reservoir that goes wrong can take a crop down in a couple of days.
The good news is that the list is short and most of it takes minutes.
Hydroponic: the routine

Aquaponic: a different routine
Add livestock and the priorities change. You are now keeping fish alive, and the plants are downstream of that.

Note what is missing: there is no full reservoir change on this list. Draining an aquaponic system would strip out the bacterial colony you spent six weeks establishing.
The first month is not the steady state
New systems need closer attention than the table suggests, for a reason that goes away on its own: the plants are small relative to the reservoir, so the solution swings further and faster with every change.
- Hydroponic — first two weeks: check pH and EC daily rather than every other day.
- Aquaponic — first six weeks: test daily and stock lightly. Almost every aquaponic failure happens during cycling, and almost all of it is overfeeding an immature biofilter.
Microgreens barely have a routine at all
No reservoir, no pump, no nutrients. Bottom-water the trays daily — into the solid tray beneath, never over the mat, because overhead watering is how damping-off starts. Stagger sowing across tiers so harvests arrive continuously. Sanitise trays between cycles with a mild bleach soak, rinsed thoroughly; skipping that is the single most common cause of mould on a rack.
What actually goes wrong
In roughly the order you will meet them:
- pH drift — the most common problem and the most commonly misdiagnosed, because it presents as a deficiency.
- Topping up with nutrient instead of water — EC creeps up week over week until the roots burn.
- A pump that quietly stopped — worth checking with your eyes, not your memory of hearing it.
- Overfeeding fish — in aquaponics, nearly everything traces back here.
